Palm has created a online eBook Store with over 37,000 titles to choose from with new bestsellers added every month. A free software called the eReader Pro is avaliable so that Palm owners and PC & Mac Computer users can read eBooks formatted with the small Palm screen in mind.

eReader eBooks are carefully prepared to maximize the reading experience. Because Palm wants the convenience and portability of an eBook to match or exceed that of the conventional paper medium they focused on the handheld computer (sometimes called a PDA) as the delivery vehicle for Palm ebooks .

The  award winning eReader Pro software is available free for Palm OS or Pocket PC Windows handhelds, and Macintosh or Windows computers. While the Pre, Pixi and Treo Pro do not have built in eReader software, a simple free download from Palm.com can turn your smartphone into a portable colour eReader.

Palms cannot download ebooks wireless like the Amazon Kindle or Sony Daily Reader but you can store your purchased eBooks in your computer files until you want to synch them to your Palm. Like Amazon and Barnes & Noble if you do lose your PC or Mac ebook files, Palm's store has your favorite books saved in your account.

Shopping at Palm's eBook Store is as easy as it's competitors, simply title search or browse through the categories and add titles to your shopping cart and then pay with a credit card or  Paypal. You can download your purchases within seconds from their website just like any ebook site.

The book titles from the Palm store can only be read on the eReader software and not on any other eReader software like applications from Nokia or the iPhone. Palm Store eBooks are encrypted to protect the authors' work. In addition, the eReader can display styled text (italicized, underlined, etc.) and formatting as well as perform functions not found on other eBook readers

This does not mean that the Pixi, Pre or Treo Pro cannot read other ebooks sold from other retailers. eReader Pro can read any doc files. A doc file is a type of handheld file that ends in either .pdb or .prc. These text files have been specifically packaged for use on a handheld. Doc format is pretty much a standard for handheld documents, and the latest version of the eReader can view them.

Because Smartphones have much more memory than eReaders devices, your Pre, Pixi & Treo Pro can store hundreds & thousands of ebooks even more than the Kindle DX but with all those photos, videos and songs in your Palm, you can also add more via additional expandable memory cards.

The eReader requires 350K of free memory for the eReader Free application and 400KB of free memory for the eReader Pro application and operates onWindows 98/ME/NT 4.0/2000/XP/Vista and Mac OS 8.6 or later, using CarbonLib 1.6 or later/Mac OS X 10.1 or later (Mac OS X 10.1.5 or later recommended)

Your Pixi and Pre can also take ePub  & PDF format books via the Shortcovers OS software application, a free download. The Palm eBook Store does not work with Shortcovers but can operate concurrently. So you can have the both of best worlds, free ePub titles from Google and other free pages & the latest and greatest bestseller titles from the Palm store.

eReader for Treo Pro:

The eReader Pro for Mobile Windows Edition allows you to read eBooks on your Palm device. You can use eReader to navigate easily, search for books and bookmark certain pages and words. Compatible with ebooks.palm.com & designed with the Palm in mind. There is a free downloadable version & an upgrade which you can buy at Palm.com

Mobile PDF Reader

Weasel Reader

Weasel Reader is a e-text reader aimed at Project Gutenberg e-texts, but will work on any text file. It uses zlib (zip) for compression resulting in very small files. Features include bookmarks, full annotation support, beaming, text selection/copying, searching, and autoscrolling. Weasel can read both zTXT and PalmDoc documents. Now you can read full color comicbooks on the go. An easy to use graphical interface and fast code make it something you will use whenever you want to read some graphical adventures.
