Jobs unveiled a new content delivery system called iBooks. The new app features a virtual bookshelf with content from five major publishers: HarperCollins, Hachette, Penguin, Macmillan, and Simon & Shuster. Apple said the iBooks store will feature both popular books as well as text books. Notably absent was any mention of whether magazines will be available as well.
Just like iTunes, books are split up into what's popular and by genre. Users can preview the first few pages before purchasing, and downloaded books are sent directly to the user's virtual bookshelf. They can then be read in a similar manner to what's already been available with Amazon's Kindle app. Users can read their books in portrait or landscape mode, change the size of the text, and hop around using a persistent table of contents.
From CNET, 27-01-10, Note: Comparisons of reading on e-ink readers against the iPad will be sure to come in 2010, we will search for more information about readability and battery useage on Apple's tablet & post in the upcoming weeks.

Line between Bookstores and Electronics blurring
By Sergio B at ebookportugal.net It is well known on computer blogs, that on January 27, Apple will finally put an end to months of speculation about it's tablet computer. The new proposal will be a multi-function device, similar to the iPhone, for the digital age. Some insiders believe that it can be an important player in the growing market of e-Readers.
Digital book readers need content providers and their relationships and agreements have been highly publicized . Recent news says that negotiations have been going on between Apple and Harper-Collins, a 200 year old English publisher. Supposedly, Harper-Collins will publish digital books for the new Apple "toy" and will sell the e-Books to customers with Apple receiving a percentage of each transaction.
Both Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble are two examples of the close relationship hardware and content providers. Both sell e-books online, as book sellers and also sell and market the electronic devices to read them on (e-Readers like the Kindle & the Nook).
