My favorite gadget: the DX
Guest article from Holly B:
Last August, a good friend got her Kindle DX and told me about it , as I am one of those who carries her books everywhere. I had also sworn I would never drink the Kindle Kool-aid. But this was a friend whose opinion I truly respected so I got one myself. I have not looked back. I love the darn thing.
Like others, if I am sitting somewhere in public and get asked about it, I can’t stop raving, I even give demonstrations. It does let everyone know I like mystery novels but I am not looking for their approval of my reading. I’ll keep talking about it until I bore the person to death. I really have fun demonstrating the delivery time (if I have a book I know I want to order).
It is my duty to put to rest all the e-reader myths, especially the one about costs – I don’t think I have paid more than $9.99 for anything and a lot of my e-books are in that magical category - "Free".
DO I think that e-readers will replace books in the near future ?– not so long as there are a lot of people brought up on books, and most readers will admit that there is something about the tactile experience of a well loved books that a Kindle can’t replace.

There are a few drawbacks to the Kindle – I think it could do a better job displaying illustrations. In fact until it can do color charts and photos it will never successfully replace textbooks (specially in fields like biology, chemistry & the other hard sciences), but when it gets there, look out. It would have been real nice to have Morrison and Boyd Organic Chemistry on a Kindle.
Do I still by ‘real books’? Yeah but I look for them on my Kindle first. Have I purposely duplicated some old books I have before, on my Kindle again? Sure have. I have found out of publication books I had never heard of on Kindle, what fun.
I just had a wild thought pass through my head – if you can download the Bible – can you picture people in churches shipping out their Kindles rather than their book form Bibles?, that would be a trip.
If you don't think you want one of these Kindles, find someone who has one – walk up to them on the street or in a cafe and ask them to show you theirs. I bet you will find out their enthusiasm is infectious and you will want one yourself.
I would rate my Kindle the best thing I purchased all year and probably all decade – and I am a gadget/electronic freak. I would give up all the other stuff but please don’t take away my Kindle.
Special thanks to Holly B for this great article
